4 Gun Control Bills Move Forward in Virginia’s General Assembly
Virginia’s General Assembly on Monday had four gun-control bills win approval. This “sets the stage” for a controversial argument between gun-rights advocates and Democratic lawmakers “who have vowed to bring comprehensive changes to the state.”
Washington Post reported that gun rights activists swarmed the Capitol, where firearms were banned last week. The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced most of the gun legislation proposed by Democrats.
According to Fox News, the bills that “sailed through the state’s Judiciary Committee would require background checks on all firearms purchases, allow law enforcement to temporarily remove guns from people deemed to be a risk to themselves or others, limit handgun purchases to one a month, and let localities decide whether to ban weapons from certain events.”
The new measures “will make it harder for law-abiding Virginians to protect themselves, while doing nothing to stop criminals,” said the National Rifle Association.

A report by Fox News said that “one measure that didn’t pass would have expanded the definition of ‘assault firearms’ under Virginia law.” “We are pleased one of the most egregious gun confiscation bills was pulled from consideration. The NRA will continue to work with our lawmakers to find solutions that address the root cause of violent crime, rather than punishing honest, hardworking Virginians,” said NRA spokeswoman Catherine Mortensen.
NBC Washington reported that “the measures approved Monday move on to the full Senate. Similar bills will be proposed and voted on in the House as well.”
