President Donald Trump accused former President Barack Obama of treason during a public appearance in the Oval Office, responding to calls from his supporters for accountability over the 2016 election investigation. Sitting beside Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the President said the Russia probe was orchestrated to sabotage his campaign and presidency. Asked by reporters who should be prosecuted for the alleged misconduct, Trump said, “It would be President Obama. He started it. The leader of the gang was President Obama. Barack Hussein Obama, have you heard of him?” He continued, “He’s guilty. This was treason. This was every word you could think of. They tried to steal the election.”

Trump’s comments follow the release of a report from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who declassified internal communications from Obama-era officials. Gabbard described the findings as evidence of a coordinated effort to undermine Trump’s campaign, calling it a “treasonous conspiracy.”

MAGA Supporters Clamor for Justice, Arrests

The accusations come as pressure mounts from within the MAGA movement to pursue legal action against figures associated with the original Russia investigation. Conservative lawmakers and commentators argue that failure to prosecute will be seen as a betrayal of Trump’s promises.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene warned that the base “will turn” if there are no results. Steve Bannon said prosecutions must follow, especially after both Trump and Gabbard went public with claims of election interference. “The accused must be indicted, must be prosecuted, must be incarcerated when found guilty,” Bannon told Axios. Meanwhile, President Trump told reporters that accountability is now necessary. “Whether it’s right or wrong, it’s time to go after people,” he said.

Obama’s Office Rejects the Charges

Former President Obama’s office issued a rare public response, calling the accusation “outrageous” and “a weak attempt at distraction.” Spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush said Gabbard’s report did not contradict the intelligence community’s 2017 assessment that Russia attempted to influence the election.

According to that assessment, Russia used online disinformation and the theft of Democratic emails to harm Hillary Clinton’s campaign. No official report concluded that voting systems were breached or votes altered.

Investigation Shows Key Findings Remain Disputed

Despite years of investigation, opinions remain sharply divided. A bipartisan Senate report from 2020 backed the original intelligence conclusions but found flaws in how information was presented. Trump and his allies say these flaws point to a deliberate effort to mislead the public and justify surveillance of his campaign.

Gabbard’s findings included emails that showed coordination between senior officials and intelligence agencies after the 2016 election. While critics argue these discussions were routine, Gabbard insists they show improper political motives behind the final assessments.

Trump referenced the declassified materials while speaking to reporters, suggesting they support his view that the entire Russia investigation was built on false premises. “They caught President Obama absolutely cold,” he said.

MAGA Momentum Builds Inside the Base

Trump’s supporters have grown increasingly vocal about the need for results. The controversy over Epstein files and recent media coverage of Trump’s past associations have only added fuel. Many in the movement view the accusations against Obama as part of a broader fight to expose corruption.

The Justice Department is also in the act of revisiting the Epstein case. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed outreach to Ghislaine Maxwell’s legal team in the hopes of gathering more information. Though unrelated to the Russia matter, the development plays into Trump’s broader theme of rooting out wrongdoing within the establishment. Conservative influencers say Trump’s willingness to confront political opponents is a key reason for the loyalty he commands. However, that loyalty may face limits if the base believes his major campaign promise will go unfulfilled.
