WHO Says Rushing to Ease Coronavirus Restrictions May Cause Resurgence
On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that rushing to ease restrictions on the coronavirus may lead to a resurgence of the illness. This is in relation to governments starting to roll out plans to open economies again.
According to Dr. Takeshi Kasai, the WHO regional director for the Western Pacific, “this is not the time to be lax.”
“Instead, we need to ready ourselves for a new way of living for the foreseeable future,” he said.
Kasai added that governments must stay vigilant to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Lifting lockdowns and measures on social distancing must be done gradually to avoid any resurgence of infections.

Fox News reported that despite health officials’ concerns, “some U.S. states on Monday announced aggressive reopening plans, while Boeing and at least one other U.S. heavy-equipment manufacturer resumed production.”
Trump has been “agitating to restart the economy,” according to Fox News. The report says he's “singling out Democratic-led states and egging on protesters complaining that the shutdowns are destroying their livelihoods and trampling their rights.”
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said he plans to restart his state’s economy soon. Gyms, hair salons, bowling alleys, and tattoo parlors could reopen on Friday according to Kemp. This can happen as long as owners would follow strict social distancing and hygiene requirements.
Another example is Texas which began a week of reopening that started with state parks. According to officials, stores would be allowed to offer curbside service later in the week.
Fears of Resurgence
Other governors said they lacked the testing supplies needed. They also mentioned that a resurgence or a second wave of infections can happen if they reopened.
“Who in this great state actually believes that they care more about jet skiing than saving the lives of the elderly or the vulnerable?” said Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, referring to restrictions in place in her state. “This action isn’t about our individual right to gather. It’s about our parents’ right to live.”
Dr. Anthony Fauci also has a message for protesters who are ignoring stay-at-home orders. He says, “this is something that is hurting from the standpoint of economics, from the standpoint of things that have nothing to do with the virus.”
On “Good Morning America,” Fauci added that “unless we get the virus under control, the real recovery economically is not gonna happen. So what you do if you jump the gun and go into a situation where you have a big spike, you’re gonna set yourself back.”
