Cruise Lines International Association Announces Mandatory “Core Elements” as Part of Resumption of Operations
Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which counts cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian as members, has announced the voluntary adoption of new health protocols which would be mandatory for members.
In addition to this, all cruise passengers will undergo testing or COVID-19 before embarkation. All guests will also need to wear masks when physical distancing cannot be done.
“Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which represents 95% of global ocean-going cruise capacity, announced today the adoption of mandatory core elements of a strong set of health protocols to be implemented as part of a phased-in, highly controlled resumption of operations,” a press release reads.

“Guided by world-class experts in medicine and science, CLIA and its ocean-going cruise line members have outlined a pathway to support a phased-in, highly-controlled return to passenger service in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America with protocols that promote the health and safety of passengers, crew and the communities visited,” according to the press release.
“The core elements mirror the successful resumption of cruising in other parts of the world and include 100% testing of passengers and crew prior to boarding — a travel industry first.”
The new “core elements” include the wearing of masks by passengers and crew when social distancing is not possible and proper “air management” and ventilation efforts, among others.
