Biden Defense Secretary Says US Forces Ready to ‘Fight Tonight’ after North Korea Warning

On Thursday, Biden’s Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, gave North Korea a warning. He stated that U.S. forces are prepared to “fight tonight” following the dictatorship’s condemnation of the U.S. Military’s drills that take place in South Korea.

U.S. and South Korean military springtime drills have resumed in South Korea. The two countries decided to pause the drills in February because of concerns related to COVID-19.

The defense secretary shared that the U.S. military is committed to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. He also discussed how important it is to “maintain” the readiness of the military. Austin also mentioned that the country’s forces are still ready to “fight tonight” on Wednesday.

U.S. – North Korea Diplomacy at a Stalemate

The talks regarding North Korea’s nuclear weapons remain at a stalemate due to disputes connected to sanctions. Many experts remain torn on whether the U.S. needs to settle for a deal that would stop the dictatorship’s nuclear activities in return for more relaxed sanctions.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of Kim Jong Un, who leads North Korea, gave a warning to U.S. troops a few days ago. She said the U.S. should avoid “causing a stink” as she criticized the drills taking place in South Korea. Kim’s influential sister also said the North Korean government sees it as a rehearsal for an invasion.

A number of experts believe that North Korea can further increase animosities through missile tests to raise its leverage in negotiations. Currently, the dictatorship country’s economy is being devastated due to the border closing amid COVID-19 concerns. The closing of the borders caused North Korea’s external trade to shrink at a rapid rate. Apart from this factor, its economy is suffering partly due to several natural disasters that happened in the country last summer.
