Biden Thinks Putin Is A ‘War Criminal’
The president’s labeling of Putin as a war criminal is one of the harshest labels placed on the beleaguered Russian president.
The remark came a week after Biden refused to label reported atrocities in Ukraine as “war crimes”. He cited ongoing investigations as the reason for withholding judgment.
However, Biden’s attitude for his Russian counterpart this Wednesday was different. Earlier that day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a highly charged address to the US Congress.
He shared videos of Ukrainians suffering from Russian attacks. The Ukrainian leader pleaded with American lawmakers to provide help for his country’s defense.
This includes establishing a no-fly zone and a donation of fighter planes. Speaking with the media later, Biden said “I think he is a war criminal.”
US To Provide Additional Assistance To Ukraine
Later, the President addressed Zelensky’s plea by listing a new assistance package for Ukraine. He said that the US will provide Ukraine with anti-aircraft and anti-armor systems, weapons, and drones.
However, he did not directly address Zelensky’s request for a no-fly zone or aircraft. Instead, Biden acknowledged the suffering of the Ukrainians on their own soil.
“We saw reports that Russian forces were holding hundreds of doctors and patients hostage in the largest hospital in Mariupol,” Biden said. “These are atrocities. They're an outrage to the world,” he said. He added that the world will make sure to make “Putin pay a very heavy price.”
US Senate Passed Resolution To Call Putin A War Criminal
Earlier, the Senate on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution amid the escalating conflict in Ukraine. In a rare unanimous showing, the Senate condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin as a war criminal.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced the resolution, which received backing from both aisles of the Senate. It urged the International Criminal Court to investigate the Russian military for crimes committed during its invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) said that Democrats and Republicans united to call out the atrocities in Ukraine. “Vladimir Putin cannot escape accountability for the atrocities committed against the Ukrainian people,” he said.
Russia Accuses Ukraine of Being A ‘US Colony’
Meanwhile, Russia continues to justify its decision to invade Ukraine as a ‘special military operation’ to provide security for two breakaway, pro-Russian provinces.
It also claimed that its operations are for demilitarizing and denazifying Ukraine, which poses a danger to their own country.
In addition, Putin accused Ukraine of being a “US colony” run by a puppet regime. He also said that Ukraine is historically a part of Russia and has no tradition of independent statehood.
The Kremlin ordered the assault on Ukraine last February 24. Three weeks and despite continuous assaults, Russia has yet to capture any of the country’s 10 biggest cities.
