Asked if he would accept the House Speaker position if the GOP retakes Congress, former President Donald Trump said no. He said he’s not interested at all in becoming the new House Speaker.

That’s assuming the Republicans take back the House in the upcoming 2022 midterm elections.

From President to House Speaker

Calls for Trump to take the head Republican role in the House resurfaced last weekend during his Commerce, Georgia rally.

Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) remarked that he plans to nominate the former President to become Speaker of the House. That is if the GOP successfully wins back the majority of the House.

During an interview with Just the News media last Tuesday, Trump said that the Speakership is not something he wants. “No, I think that it's not something I wanted.

A lot of people bring it up. It’s brought up all the time. No, it's not something I want to do. I want to look at what's happening, and then we're going to be doing something else. No, it's not something I would be interested in,” Trump said

During the rally, Gaetz told the crowd about the GOP’s plans. “Give us the ability to fire Nancy Pelosi, take back the majority, impeach Joe Biden,” he told the cheering crowd.

In return, Gaetz said he’ll nominate Trump to replace Pelosi as a Republican House Speaker. Caught by surprise, Trump managed to provide some reaction. “Thank you very much. Thank you, everybody,” he said as he reclaimed the lectern. “Well, that was interesting.”

Not A New Idea

The post of Speaker for Trump is not a new idea. Gaetz previously pitched the idea last year in Iowa while discussing the midterm elections.

With polls showing that Republicans have a fighting chance to retake the House majority, Gaetz proposed installing Trump as House Speaker.

This gives the former president the opportunity to become one of the most powerful people in the US again. What’s more, Trump won’t need to undergo another national election in order to gain the Speakership.

In addition, the Constitution does not have any specific requirements that only a House member can become House Speaker.

Theoretically, the GOP can elect Trump to the position. Of course, should Trump choose to go the regular route, he should have no problem winning a congressional seat in his new home state of Florida.

Meanwhile, Gaetz continued to expound on his idea. He asked the crowd: “Can you just imagine Nancy Pelosi having to hand that gavel to Donald J. Trump?

She didn’t like when that Jan. 6 guy was sitting in her chair in her office. She is sure not going to like seeing Donald Trump sitting in her chair.”

Trump Has Yet To Decide If He’s Running For President Again

However, the talk about the Speakership remains just talk. Trump has yet to make a final decision on whether he’s running for President again in 2024. Any announcements about his plans will more likely happen after the 2022 midterm elections.

Should he run again, both his Republic primary challengers and eventual Democrat opponent won’t find a pushover?

Trump won the nomination against other Republicans in the Conservative Political Action Conference's straw poll last month.

Meanwhile, a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey found Trump winning a rematch with nemesis President Joe Biden. In a 2024 hypothetical matchup, Trump received 47% of the votes versus President Joe Biden’s 41%.
