New Poll Shows Trump Leading by Double Digits in Potential South Carolina Republican Race
Former President Donald Trump is ahead of his possible challengers in South Carolina, as per a recent Trafalgar Group poll.
The poll asked, “If the Republican presidential primary were held today and the following were the candidates, for whom would you most likely vote?”
With 43.4 percent of the vote, Trump was the clear favorite. Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida, trails by 15.6% with 27.8% of the vote. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) of South Carolina dropped to third place with 14.3% of the vote, followed by the former U.S. ambassador to the UN. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, with 1.1 percent, former Vice President Mike Pence, with 1.8 percent, and Nikki Haley, with 11.6 percent each.
In the absence of DeSantis, Trump receives 47.9 percent of the vote, while Scott and Haley gain 22.8 and 21.1 percent, respectively.
The poll was conducted among 1,078 likely GOP presidential primary voters on January 24–26, 2023. It has a margin of error of +/- 2.9%.
It falls during Trump's hectic campaign weekend, which includes trips to South Carolina and New Hampshire, two early primary states.
Over the weekend, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Gov. Henry McMaster (R-SC), and Rep. Russell Fry joined Trump at a campaign event in South Carolina (R-SC).
“I’m thrilled to be back in the great state of South Carolina, we won it twice by record numbers, and it’s just a real honor. It’s an incredible place,” the former president said, noting that his campaign will be “about the future.”
“This campaign will be about issues, ” he explained. “Joe Biden has put America on the fast track to ruin and destruction, and we will ensure that he does not receive four more years.”
He also said: “The 2024 election is our one shot to save our country, and we need a leader who is ready to do that on day one. We need a fighter who can stand up to the left, who can stand up to the swamp, stand up to the media, stand up to the deep state … am I allowed to say stand up to the RINOs too?”
At the annual gathering of the New Hampshire Republican Party, Trump also gave a speech and named Steve Stepanaek, the party's chairman, as his principal campaign adviser.
