Poll: Majority Believe Trump Charges Are Politically Motivated
A recent Reuters/Ipsos survey found that the clear majority of Republicans believe federal criminal proceedings against Donald Trump are politically motivated. He is also far ahead of his nearest competitor in the GOP presidential primary contest.
The survey, which was conducted starting Friday, revealed that 81% of self-identified Republicans felt the case was driven by politics, showing the country's severe split. President Joseph Biden, a Democrat, has stated repeatedly that he is not involved in the Department of Justice's case.
The percentage of Republicans who feel the former president is being unfairly attacked much outnumbers the 30-35% of GOP loyalists that political experts say constitute his core constituency.
According to the Reuters/Ipsos survey, 62% of respondents, including 91% of Democrats and 35% of Republicans, believed Trump illegally held secret information at his Florida property, as prosecutors claimed.
The indictment does not appear to have harmed Trump's status in the Republican presidential primary process for 2024. As the indictment was unsealed on Friday afternoon, the particular accusations, including obstruction of justice, became known.
Trump was chosen as the preferred candidate by 43% of self-identified Republicans, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was chosen by 22%.
Trump led DeSantis 49% to 19% in early May, but that was before DeSantis actually entered the race.
The rest of the GOP field, which includes former Vice President Mike Pence, who launched his campaign last week, received support in the low single digits.
The most recent survey included responses from 1,005 individuals throughout the country and had a credibility interval, or measure of precision, of 4 percentage points for all voting-age Americans and between 6 and 7 percentage points for Republicans.
