Supreme Court to Hear Oral Arguments Against Affirmative Action in Harvard, UNC

On Thursday, the Supreme Court overturned affirmative action or racial preferences in college admissions after an Asian-American advocacy organization accused Harvard and the University of North Carolina of having discriminatory admissions practices.

In decades of affirmative action litigation, the case Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College will be remembered as one of the court's most significant decisions.

The decision was reached by a 6-3 vote of conservative and liberal justices, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing the majority opinion. Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor all voiced their disagreement.

Jackson recused herself from that part of the case because Kagan, a former dean of Harvard Law School, served on the board of overseers of the university.
