Abuse of Power: Oceanfront Property Tied to Obama Exempt From Hawaii’s Environmental Laws.

Expect the next four years to be an abuse of power.

Honolulu granted the developers of an oceanfront estate tied to Barack Obama an exemption from environmental laws that protect Hawaii’s beaches.

Property owners like Marty Nesbitt, chair of the Obama Foundation, argued to protect the building in eastern Oahu.

State officials say the former president, who was born and raised in Hawaii, will be among the property’s future occupants. Surprising. While others builders are being stopped, it would seem as though if you know the former President, you can get around permit laws.

On Monday, Kathy Sokugawa, the director of the Department of Planning and Permitting, sided with the property owners and their abuse of power. Expect this for the next four years with Biden.

Locals say they are concerned that the approval sets a “dangerous precedent” for the future. Sokugawa, who declined an interview request, didn’t address the issue in her final written decision.

Honolulu Councilwoman Heidi Tsuneyoshi urged officials to make the owners go back and get the environmental permit they had skirted. She said that exemption violated the spirit of the law. The county declined.

“I’m just disappointed that this project wasn’t more fully vetted because of the sensitivities of the area,” she said.
