Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), a staunch critic of US support for Israel, continued her attacks by calling Israel an apartheid state. Referring to Israel, she tweeted a single sentence: “Apartheid states aren’t democracies.”

AOC: STFU

AOC's tweet prompted a scathing response from an Israeli Arab, Mohammad Kabiya. He is an Israeli Bedouin who served in the IDF as a search and rescue team member in the Israeli Air Force. As a result, Kabiya tweeted back: “I’m an Israeli-Arab and a Muslim and I’m a proud Israeli. We are fighting Hamas terrorists who hijacked our religion while you tweet about something you know nothing about. STFU!!!”

Earlier in 2018, a series of tweets noted that AOC seems to base her knowledge from known anti-Israel groups. These groups include Jewish Voices for Peace, J Street, and “Palestinian rights organizations”.

AOC’s Sources Are Anti-Israel Organizations

The Anti-Defamation League noted that the “Jewish Voice for Peace is a radical anti-Israel activist group that advocates for a complete economic, cultural and academic boycott” of Israel. JVP considers Israel supporters as complicit in the country’s “acts of racist oppression of Palestinians. JVP leaders believe that expressing support for Israel, or not challenging mainstream Jewish organizations that support Israel, must also be viewed as an implicit attack on people of color and all marginalized groups in the United States.”

In addition, J Street is also known as an anti-Israel organization. As far back as 2010, Attorney Alan Dershowitz opined that J Street is neither a pro-Israel or pro-peace lobby group like it claims. Also, Hill’s Paul Miller said that J Street often partners with anti-semitic Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), another advocate for Israeli boycott.

Resolution to Block $735 Weapons Sales To Israel

Apart from calling Israel an apartheid state, Ocasio-Cortez also tried to halt weapons support to Israel. She filed a resolution Wednesday to block a White House-approved $735 million arms sale to Israel. Joining her in the resolution are fellow progressives Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Representative Mark Pocan (D-WI).

In particular, the resolution sought to disallow the sale of Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMS) to Israel. JDAMs provide precision guidance to existing “dumb” weapons. When attached to standard bombs or rockets, they become precision-guided missiles. In fact, Israel uses US-supplied JDAMS in their offensive drive in Palestinian-held areas.

“US Not Interested In Peace’

“For decades, the U.S. has sold billions of dollars in weaponry to Israel without ever requiring them to respect basic Palestinian rights,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement. In addition, she said that the US is complicit in the death and displacement of millions.  Meanwhile, Tlaib issued her own statement agreeing with Ocasio-Cortez.  “Approving this sale now, while failing to even try to use it as leverage for a ceasefire, sends a clear message to the world – the U.S. is not interested in peace, and does not care about the human rights and lives of Palestinians. You cannot claim to support human rights and peace on Earth and continue to back the extremist Netanyahu regime, it’s that simple,” she said.

Consequently, the move to block the sale to Israel shows a widening gap within the Democratic Party. Many remain hesitant in breaking ties with a long-time ally.  Instead, President Joe Biden called for both sides to stand down following the now 10-day long violent conflict.
