Donald Trump survived yet another assassination attempt on Sunday while playing golf at his West Palm Beach course. This is the second attempt on the former president's life in just two months, raising significant concerns about his safety as he continues his 2024 campaign.

Suspect Caught

The FBI is investigating the latest attempt, which took place at Trump International Golf Club. The shooter, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was armed with an AK-47 style rifle. U.S. Secret Service agents spotted Routh hiding in the bushes about 400 to 500 yards away from Trump. The agents immediately engaged with the suspect, but he fled the scene in an SUV.

Law enforcement quickly put out a BOLO alert for Routh's vehicle, and he was apprehended on I-95 in Martin County shortly after the attack. Authorities recovered backpacks, a GoPro camera, and the rifle left behind at the scene. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the suspect was unarmed at the time of his arrest and did not resist.

Early Details of the Incident

The Secret Service had been monitoring the area around Trump’s golf course, keeping a few holes ahead of the former president as he played. Routh’s rifle was spotted through a fence by one of the agents, who immediately notified law enforcement. After a brief search of the grounds, the suspect fled in an SUV, leading to a multi-agency response along I-95.

According to Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder, officers flooded the highway and managed to safely stop Routh's vehicle. “He never resisted or questioned why he was being stopped,” Snyder said. Routh’s motive for the attack remains unclear, but investigators are looking into his social media posts, which include criticisms of Trump and strong pro-Ukraine sentiments.

Political and Law Enforcement Reactions

The assassination attempt has drawn reactions from both sides of the political spectrum. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed relief that Trump was unharmed. “We condemn any political violence, and I am thankful that former President Trump is safe,” Harris said in a statement.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a staunch ally of Trump, also commented on the incident, stating that Trump “is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known.” Graham emphasized the need for law enforcement to remain vigilant in protecting political figures, particularly during the upcoming election season. Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state would conduct its own investigation into how the shooter was able to get so close to Trump, despite enhanced security measures following the earlier attempt in Pennsylvania.

Trump’s Resilience in the Face of Threats

This assassination attempt marks the second time in recent months that Trump has been targeted. In July, Trump narrowly survived another attack when a bullet grazed his ear at a Pennsylvania rally. Since then, his security detail has been strengthened, with agents using armored vehicles, bulletproof glass at rallies, and more stringent measures at public events.

Trump, however, has remained defiant. Following Sunday’s attack, he sent a message to supporters declaring, “Nothing will stop me. I will NEVER SURRENDER!” The former president is scheduled to resume his campaign with appearances in Michigan and New York later this week.
