Biden Announces Reelection Bid
Despite the huge majority of people feeling that he should not run again, U.S. President Joe Biden (D) formally stated on Tuesday morning that he would seek a second term as President of the United States.
Biden made it official, with a video posted to his social media sites, two weeks after revealing his plans to Al Roker on the Today Show during an Easter Egg hunt at the White House.
“Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours,” Biden wrote.
“That’s why I’m running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job.”
Biden is already the oldest president in American history at 80 years old, and he would be 86 by the end of a probable second term.
A recent NBC News poll found that 70% of Americans, including 51% of Democrats, say Biden should stand aside and not seek re-election, with almost half citing the president's age as a key worry.
The president cautioned in his campaign launch video, which begins with footage from January 6th and includes subjects like abortion and LGBTQ rights, that the next election would be a “battle for the soul of America.”
Mr. Biden will face a re-election challenge not only from Republicans but also from Democratic contender Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who is already polling in the double digits after announcing his intention to run.
