Biden Arrives in Ukraine
President Joseph Biden took a secret train Monday from Poland into the conflict-torn Ukraine to demonstrate to Kyiv that the United States is fully and unwaveringly supporting it.
According to the AP, Biden stood alongside his colleague from Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, inside Mariinsky Palace and recalled the worries voiced about a year ago that Russia may invade hastily and seize the capital of Ukraine.
“One year later, Kyiv stands,” Biden said from behind a podium adorned with the U.S. and Ukrainian flags. “And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands. The Americans stand with you, and the world stands with you.”
On his first trip to the nation since Russian troops invaded on February 24, 2022, Biden decides he wants to be both seen and heard.
As both sides prepare for spring offensives, he also hopes to increase international support for Ukraine as the conflict between the two Eastern European countries is set to worsen.
According to the AP article, Biden promised an additional $500 million in U.S. help in Kyiv, including anti-tank missiles, air surveillance radars, howitzer shells, and other equipment but no new cutting-edge weapons.
According to estimates, Ukraine uses thousands more shells per month than what the EU’s defense industry is currently able to generate.
Zelensky responded that he and Biden had discussed “long-range weapons and the weapons that may still be supplied to Ukraine even though it wasn’t supplied before.”
He made no more mention of new material commitments for the military.
Biden however did promise long-term support for Ukraine, saying “freedom is priceless. It’s worth fighting for for as long as it takes.”
“And that’s how long we’re going to be with you, Mr. President, for as long as it takes,” Biden vowed. Zelensky, speaking in English, answered: “We’ll do it.”
