Biden Removes Trump Ban on Funding Abortions Overseas
On Thursday morning, the White House revealed that President Joe Biden will sign an executive order that will revoke the Mexico City policy. This rule disallows foreign NGOs from getting U.S. funding if they support or perform abortions as a way of family planning.
The Mexico City policy was first formally made into law by former President Ronald Reagan. Since it became law in 1985, multiple Democratic presidents have repealed it. Consequently, any Republican president that followed has reinstated the policy.
It has been almost four years since former President Donald Trump reinstated the policy. Now, Biden will release an order to rescind it again.
In a statement, the White House said that many women from all walks of life “have been denied access to reproductive health care” all around the country and the world. It added that the president plans on protecting and broadening people’s access to reproductive health care.
In 2017, Trump released a memorandum, reviving the Mexico Policy put forward by former President George W. Bush. This version prevented USAID from providing funding to foreign NGOs that support and perform abortions. Exceptions to this policy include cases of rape, incest, or for serious, life-threatening instances,
President Trump, however, decided to extend this further to all federal departments and agencies.
Marist and the Knights of Columbus had a survey, asking Americans whether they want taxpayer money to support abortion or not. The poll showed that 58% opposed it.
Also included in the survey was a question on whether or not they agree with the use of taxpayer money to provide support for abortion overseas. In this poll, 77% opposed it.
