Biden Signs Bill to Prevent a Railroad Strike, Stop Workers From Starting a Strike
President Joe Biden signed a bill approved by Congress on Friday that aims to prevent a railroad strike and that prevents workers from starting one.
Even with a long history of backing trains and railway workers, Biden signed the bill, overriding their threat to go on strike in the hopes of achieving better working conditions.
He claimed that it was a “tough” decision to sign the bill, but the president stuck by it, saying it was the “right thing to do at the moment.”
“A rail shutdown would have devastated our economy,” Biden said.
Earlier this week, the president passed the issue to Congress, creating distance between himself and negotiations. This came even after he claimed that he was a big dealmaker back in September when he struck a deal that postponed the strike after the elections.
Railway workers had been preparing to go on strike in December since their employers did not to meet their demands for more paid sick leave.
“Look I know this bill doesn’t have paid sick leave,” the president admitted, adding that he supported it for all American workers.
“That fight isn’t over,” he said.
Biden also showed off his record regarding the economy. He also celebrated that gas prices are going down and that the November unemployment report was solid.
