Biden Reveals Plan to Host African Leaders Summit in Washington

U.S. President Joe Biden announced Wednesday his plan to host a summit for African leaders in Washington in December.

Scheduled to be held on Dec. 13-15, the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit will demonstrate the country’s commitment to Africa, which the president called “enduring.” He also mentioned that the gathering will “underscore the importance of U.S.-Africa relations and increased cooperation on shared global priorities.”

U.S.-African Leaders Summit to tackle multiple issues

Biden also said that the summit would aid in fostering new economic engagement. It will also reinforce the two regions’ commitment to democracy and human rights. The summit will also help manage the effects of COVID-19 and future pandemics, strengthen peace and security, discuss responses to climate change, and reinforce regional and global health.

In 2014, former President Barack Obama also hosted a similar summit in Washington. It followed Obama's trip to Africa in 2013.

Biden has not visited the Continent since becoming U.S. President.
