Destroyed at the Southern Border

In a statement released Tuesday, Trump compared the present situation against his accomplishment during his presidency. He pointed to his border policy wins while he was President. Trump said that the US-Mexico border under his watch remained “in great shape,” and remained strong and secure during his administration. The former president also blamed the Democrats for canceling the border wall project, which should be standing now if Biden allowed the project to complete.

In addition, Trump touted his other successful efforts. He said his administration ended the catch-and-release policies, turned away fraudulent asylum seekers, and prevented drug dealers and other criminal elements from entering the country. “Our country is being destroyed at the Southern border, a terrible thing to see!” he concluded.

Massive Wave at the Border

Meanwhile, the Biden administration is facing a southern border crisis with a massive wave of migrants. The overwhelming numbers prompted Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to ask for volunteers. The DHS will ask these volunteers to help deal with the migrant crisis.

In addition, the US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) announced they would shut down three border checkpoints in Arizona. Specifically, they hope to contain the flux of migrants by lessening the number of open border crossings.

Abbott Joins the Chorus

Texas Governor Greg Abbott slammed the Biden administration as well. He called the situation at the US-Mexico border a “growing crisis” fueled by a surge of migrant arrivals. In a news conference, Abbott said he received briefings from US Border Patrol officials and toured the borders as well. He said he witnessed people crossing the border illegally and blamed Biden for the changing policies at the border.

“There is a crisis on the Texas border right now with the overwhelming number of people who are coming across the border. “This crisis is a result of President Biden’s open border policies. It invites illegal immigration and is creating a humanitarian crisis in Texas right now that will grow increasingly worse by the day,” Abbott said.

Increasing Number of Migrants

The New York Times reported that US authorities apprehended nearly 100,000 migrants on the border in February. This is more than double of the 36,687 apprehended in the same month last year. In addition, migrant children are arriving in increasing numbers. An estimated 3,250 migrant children crossed the border within the last two weeks.

Consequently, the White House now admits to holding these migrant children for more than three days as required by law. From Customs and Border Patrol facilities, these children head to other accommodations run by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In fact, even White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki admitted to the overwhelming numbers. “There are more children coming across the border than we have facilities for at this point in time,” she said Tuesday.

Now Is Not the Time to Come to the US

Psaki said now is not the time to come to the US. “I know we’re being asked about our change in policy, but there are a couple of reasons why we think people are coming to the border. Individuals and families are fleeing prosecution, fleeing violence, fleeing economic hardships, and other things, the region has also experienced two hurricanes in the fall,” she said. “And all of this is taking place during a global pandemic that has impacted other countries' economies placing undue hardships on its people just as it did in the United States,” Psaki concluded.
