Breaking: CDC Tells Vaccinated Americans to Mask Up

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) changed its recommendation for mask-wearing, saying that fully vaccinated Americans should wear masks indoors again in places with a significant COVID-19 transmission rate. It also recommended that kids should wear masks when attending school in fall.

Despite this, federal health officials still stand by their belief that fully vaccinated people only represent a minuscule number of transmissions. However, some of the said vaccinated people may also be carrying higher levels of the coronavirus than what was previously known and transmit it to others.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky explained the change in a call with reporters. She said the pandemic continues to pose a serious threat to the health of everyone in America. According to her, they have obtained new science connected to the delta variant. This required theCDC to update the guidance on what a fully vaccinated person can do.

Change in CDC Guidance for Fully Vaccinated Americans Come Ahead of the Fall Season

This update to the guidance comes ahead of fall. Within that season, experts project that the delta variant will cause another surge in COVID-19 cases. It’s also the season that a significant number of large-scale employers plan to bring their workers back to the office. In May, the CDC previously said that fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks in most settings, both indoors and outdoors.

In her announcement, Walensky said that fully vaccinated people in places with significantly high transmission should wear masks in public, indoor settings to help curb the spread of COVID-19. She also said the CDC recommendation also goes for schools, where teachers, staff, students, and visitors should wear masks, regardless of whether they have received the vaccine or not.

The CDC director said new data shows how the variant behaves. It behaves “uniquely differently from past strains of the virus,” implying that some fully vaccinated people who have the delta variant may spread it to others.

With this, outrage came pouring in from social media. Many who are against the new guidelines have been vocal about their disagreement with the new guidance. Some even said that the CDC’s guidelines have been politicized and that it is not based on any “science.”

However, the CDC guidance is only a recommendation. Whether mask mandates will return is still up to local and state governments.
