Man in Liberal California Opened Fire on Family Killing 2 People

A California man was apprehended by authorities and charged with murder after he allegedly fatally shot his grandmother and his father’s girlfriend while they opened gifts on Christmas Day.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office news release, Austin Alvarez, 23, fired shots that hit his grandmother (Magdalena Alvarez) and his father’s girlfriend (Meisa Rashid). As the suspect was leaving the house, he saw his father in a vehicle and fired shots toward’s the latter’s direction. However, he did not manage to strike him.

According to police, the family gathered at a Reedly home on Christmas day to exchange gifts. At some point, Alvarez reportedly pulled a gun during the said visit and began shooting at his family.

Deputies responded to the home and arrived at the scene at about 1:45 p.m. There, they found Magdalena Alvarez, 58, and Meisa Rashid, 39, fatally wounded.

The Sheriff’s deputies found out that Alvarez fled the scene of the crime in a GMC pick up. Authorities launched a combined effort with the California Highway Patrol and the police departments at Reedley, Sanger, Orange Cove, and Kingsburg to track him down. Hours after the shooting, Alvarez was arrested by authorities.

He is now facing two murder charges and one attempted murder charge, with a bail set at $2.5 million.
