Pelosi Taps Cheney To Join Capitol Riots Committee

Last Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) named Republican Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) to the newly formed Capitol Riots committee. This makes Cheney the lone GOP appointee among Pelosi's eight selections.

Cheney Joins Capitol Riots Committee

Pelosi announced Cheney’s appointment last Thursday. “We're very honored and proud that she has agreed to serve on the committee,” she said. The Wyoming representative lost her position as chairman of the House Republican Conference following her support of an impeachment complaint against former President Donald Trump.

Previously, Cheney unceremoniously attacked Trump and blamed him for the riot. Cheney is joined by Representative Adam Kirzinger (R-IL). Consequently, both voted along with all Democrats in favor of forming the Capitol Riots committee.   

‘Assault On Congress’

Cheney said that the Capitol Riots committee is the only remaining way to investigate the “unprecedented assault on Congress” thoroughly. Meanwhile, Republican leadership dismissed the committee, calling it a partisan attempt by Democrats.

Reportedly, GOP House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy threatened to strip Republicans of committee assignments if they joined the panel. 

Despite the threats, Cheney moved on with the new assignment. In fact, she said she’s honored to serve on the committee. Plus, she insisted that her oath to the constitution and commitment to rule of law goes beyond partisan politics.

In a statement, she said that “What happened on January 6th can never happen again. Those who are responsible for the attack need to be held accountable and this select committee will fulfill that responsibility in a professional, expeditious, and non-partisan manner.”

Capitol Riot Committee Members

During that same conference, Pelosi announced the roster of the 13-member committee. Chairing the committee is Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), chair of the Homeland Security Committee.

Other Democratic leaders who joined are Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), chair of the House Administration Committee, and Adam Schiff (D-CA), chair of the Intelligence Committee.  In addition, Reps. Pete Aguilar (CA),  Stephanie Murphy (FL), Jamie Raskin (MD), and Elaine (VA). 

Meanwhile, Cheney joined the other Democratic committee members at the Capitol after the conference. She professed confidence in the work ahead. “It will be thorough, it will be professional, it will be serious, and not partisan.

I think this is something where we all have to come together,” she said. Meanwhile, McCarthy has yet to announce if he’ll provide five GOP appointees to the committee or ignore the request altogether. 

‘Not Threatening Anybody’

In addition, McCarthy said he's “not threatening anybody” with committee removal. However, he said that Cheney broke tradition by seeking a committee assignment from the speaker. Usually, committee membership is decided by the leadership of their party.
