Chicago Student Calls Out Lighfoot’s ‘Blatant Lie’ About Crime After Death of Classmate
On Thursday, a student from the University of Chicago called out Mayor Lori Lightfoot for making a “blatant lie” regarding a violent guns crime in the city a few days following the killing of a fellow classmate by a stray bullet while on the commute home from an internship.
“Lori Lightfoot had the nerve recently to say that crime in Chicago is on the decline—that’s a blatant lie,” said Audrey Unverferth on “Fox & Friends.”
On Wednesday, President Joe Biden met with the Chicago mayor. This comes in the wake of a highly violent holiday weekend in the city.
For Unverferth, the meeting created an opportunity to have a photo-op. It also served as an example of “empty platitudes” from Lightfoot.
“I don’t have confidence in Lightfoot anymore,” she commented.
As for the slain student, Max Lewis, 20, was on the city’s Green Line during rush hour last July 1. He was coming home from his internship at an investment firm located in downtown Chicago. While he sat inside the train, a stray bullet pierced through the window and hit his neck at 51st Street/Washington Park Station.
Lewis died on Sunday following the removal of his life support.
While Unverferth didn’t personally know Lewis, she said her fellow classmates felt “devastated” because of his “senseless” death.
Unverferth wrote in an op-ed, as published on The Federalist: “I’ve ridden the CTA countless times. When my friends and I board the train, we shouldn’t fear that we’ll be murdered by stray bullets. When we sit down on the bus, we shouldn’t worry that we’ll be knifed to death.”
