Reports have surfaced that Chinese hackers, allegedly part of a group known as “Salt Typhoon,” targeted the communications data of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance. The Chinese hackers reportedly accessed phone data, including call logs and unencrypted messages, in a strategic intelligence-gathering campaign that raises concerns over national security and election interference.

The Allegations Against Chinese Hackers: Espionage, Not Interference

The alleged attack was brought to light after cybersecurity teams identified infiltration in telecommunications networks, including Verizon. Sources familiar with the investigation suggest that hackers targeted call logs, contact data, and unencrypted communications from the phones of Trump and Vance. These data points, while lacking audio content, can provide valuable intelligence by revealing patterns in communication and associations. The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) confirmed they are working with affected companies to prevent further breaches, while also investigating the full scope of compromised data.

While this breach is considered an espionage attempt rather than direct campaign interference, it demonstrates how foreign actors might collect sensitive information to leverage influence over a candidate’s inner circle. According to national security experts, such data could potentially aid in identifying individuals for influence operations.

Who is Salt Typhoon?

The Chinese hackers’ group Salt Typhoon is believed to be backed by the Chinese government, aligning with a trend of espionage campaigns targeting U.S. political figures and telecommunications infrastructure. This group has been linked to previous attacks on U.S. communications networks and is thought to operate with the intent of long-term intelligence collection rather than single-use sabotage.

Salt Typhoon has reportedly accessed networks of major U.S. telecom providers like AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen, gathering data on various public figures. In the Trump-Vance case, the campaign was notified by the FBI after Verizon identified the infiltration. However, it is uncertain whether the hackers were able to access audio or encrypted messages due to the layers of security in place on the phones.

What Was the Extent of the Chinese Hackers’ Work?

The number of compromised individuals is relatively low—fewer than 100 individuals, according to sources—but the impact could still be significant if the hackers manage to sustain or deepen their access. Experts say that Salt Typhoon may have limited its activities to avoid detection, as re-establishing such access after detection can be challenging for state-sponsored Chinese  hackers.

As the 2024 election season heats up, U.S. authorities remain vigilant, with the FBI setting up a multi-agency task force to monitor for similar attempts. Both Republican and Democratic campaigns have reportedly been targeted, including teams affiliated with Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, demonstrating a bipartisan threat landscape.

The FBI and CISA have worked to alert telecom providers, who are cooperating to tighten cybersecurity protocols. Verizon spokesperson Rich Young stated the company is “aware that a highly sophisticated nation-state actor has targeted several U.S. telecommunications providers.” Law enforcement is treating the hack as a serious national security concern, setting up an emergency review board to investigate how Salt Typhoon bypassed existing defenses.

Despite the Trump campaign’s attempt to attribute the breach to the current administration’s cybersecurity policies, U.S. officials emphasize that foreign espionage efforts against political figures are a long-standing issue. As National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned earlier this year, adversaries have long seen American elections as strategic opportunities to collect intelligence.
