Coronavirus Death Toll Surpasses SARS

The coronavirus, which has alarmed many people in various countries, has reached a daily death toll of 100. The total death toll has topped 1,000, according to China's National Health Commission (NHC).

According to the World Health Organization, there are at least 40,235 confirmed cases of the virus in mainland China, where 99 percent of the infected people reside. Moreover, there are 319 cases in 24 other countries outside of China – including 12 in the U.S.

The coronavirus has killed more people than the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in China in 2003 (774 people died and 8,000 were infected by the SARS).

Fox News reported that “despite efforts by the Chinese government to contain the virus and international efforts to isolate patients, 66 newly infected people were discovered aboard a quarantined cruise ship in Yokohama, Japan, on Monday.”

According to the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), while almost all of the confirmed coronavirus cases are in China, the outbreak constitutes a “very grave threat” for the rest of the world. “With 99% of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
