Cuban Protestors’ Cries Against Communist Dictatorship Fall on the Deaf Ears of US Democratic Socialist
A protest against the Cuban government broke out on Sunday, demanding freedom and pushing for the disbandment of the said country’s dictatorship. However, it seems some of the U.S.’ most outspoken Democratic socialists remained quiet, not acknowledging the events unfolding in the island nation.
Media outlet Fox News tried to reach out to many of the U.S.’ self-professed Democratic socialists, as they would call themselves. However, none of them had replied nor had mentioned the protest on their social media pages.
Thousands of Cuban citizens marched through the Malecon promenade in Havana and in other places, protesting about food shortages, high product prices, and the COVID-19 pandemic. It quickly became one of the biggest protests against the Cuban government ever.
The local police initially walked behind them as the protesters chanted the words “Freedom,” “Enough,” and “Unite.” One motorcyclist at the protest pulled out an American flag but others snatched it away from him.
Many Criticize Biden Government for Failure to Respond to Cuban Protest Against The Country's Dictatorship
Many on social media had criticized President Joe Biden’s administration as they seem to find it hard to know how to respond to this event.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) took a jab at the State Department over a tweet regarding protest concerns. He said they protest, not because of COVID but because of the economic situation in the country that kept getting worse.
“People in Cuba are protesting 62 years of socialism, lies, tyranny & misery not ‘expressing concern about rising COVID-19 cases/deaths. Why is it so hard for @Potus & the people in his administration to say that?” Rubio wrote on Twitter.
Many critics will possibly reason that the Democratic socialist remain quiet this early due to so many factors still unknowns. President Miguel Diaz-Canel of Cuba, who heads the country’s Communist Party, already called on the revolutionaries to counter the protestors.
“We are prepared to do anything,” Diaz-Canel stated during a national address. “We will be battling in the streets.”
The Cuban president also said: “We are calling on all the revolutionaries in the country, all the Communists, to hit the streets wherever there is an effort to produce these provocations.”
