The death toll of illegal migrants found abandoned in a trailer in Texas under scorching-hot weather had risen to 51 on Tuesday. President Joe Biden has publicly blamed “criminal” professional smugglers for the incident.

Bexar County official Rebeca Clay-Flores reported the new number of undocumented migrants, “39 men and 12 women,” who have died in the tragedy following the discovery of the abandoned trailer on an isolated road in the area.

The official did not reveal how many survived and are being treated in the hospital, but it could be around 11 people, based on the initial number officials gave; this number possibly includes four children.

The Homeland Security Department announced that it had opened a criminal prove, while Biden slammed human smuggling gangs and blamed them for the tragedy.

“The tragic loss of life in San Antonio, Texas that took place yesterday is horrifying and heartbreaking,” Biden said in a statement.

“This incident underscores the need to go after the multi-billion dollar criminal smuggling industry preying on migrants and leading to far too many innocent deaths,” he went on to say
