On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis revealed that defunding the police in Florida is effectively “off the table” after he signed an anti-riot legislation into law.

Shortly after signing HB1, also known as the “anti-riot” bill, DeSantis spoke to Breitbart News about the legislation. He said the law shows a significant contrast between how blue and red areas deal with the issues of unrest as cities run by Democrats continue to experience riots in the streets.

The more blue the place is, “the worse it’s governed,” DeSantis said. He also described what has already happened as a “disaster” and that the situation has become“exacerbated” due to the riots and the COVID-19 lockdowns.

According to the governor, if they don’t stand up for the police, more crimes will happen. He also noted that in some cases, in blue areas, the police there needed to recede. This results in higher crime rates in the area.

DeSantis Promises to Prevent the Defunding of the Police

DeSantis also mentioned that the legislation puts a line in the sand with regards to defunding the law enforcement sector. Defunding the police is something that many in the radical left demand, such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who recently called to end policing and incarceration.

The Florida governor also mentioned that they need to “hold local government accountable,” giving Minneapolis as an example. He said Minneapolis let law enforcement “stand down,” which allowed people “run wild” in the city. Given that case, any damage should be the responsibility of the local government, as it is there to protect its residents in the first place.

Additionally, the legislation also creates stronger repercussions for people who take part in riots and in other lawless acts.

However, according to DeSantis, blue-controlled jurisdictions will possibly reject those proposals since ideology drives their actions. However, DeSantis promised, will “navigate all this” in a way that’s better compared to such areas.
