NBA legend and devout Catholic Kobe Bryant reportedly attended mass hours before he died with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven other passengers in a helicopter crash. Archbishop José H. Gomez, who had often met Bryant, called him a “very good Catholic, a faithful Catholic.”

“I remember one time going to the Lakers’ practice, and I had a good conversation with him,” Gomez said. “We are praying for the eternal repose of his soul, his daughter who also died and for the family. It must be a very challenging time for his family. So, let’s pray for him and pray for his family.”

According to Fr. David Barnes of Boston, Bryant attended Mass on the morning of his death. “A friend texted me today to tell me that a friend of her’s [sic] saw #KobeBryant at #Catholic Mass this morning. Mass is the worship of God. Heaven is the worship of God. Go to Mass here so that you can worship God forever in heaven,” he tweeted.

The service was conducted by Father Anthony Vu, a Vietnamese parochial vicar at the church.
