Disney World Employees Make Petition to Delay Park Reopening: “Please Hear What We Are Saying”

Employees of Walt Disney World urge park executives and state and local officials to reassess their decision about park reopening.

They urge them to reconsider delaying the reopening of the parks. This follows concerns over the surge of coronavirus cases in Florida.

In a petition they posted on moveon.org, they said: “This virus is not gone, unfortunately it’s only become worse in this state. Having our theme parks remain closed until cases are steadily decreasing would keep our guests, our employees and their families safe.”

“Re-opening the theme parks is only putting our guests, employees, and families at higher risk for contracting COVID-19. While theme parks are a great way to relax and enjoy free time, it is a non-essential business; it is not fair to the people who work there to risk their lives, especially if they are at risk or have family members who are at risk. People are more important than making a profit,” they then added.

“Mayors, Theme Park Executives, Government Officials – please hear what we are saying,” they also mentioned.

COVID-19 in Florida

The latest update by the state’s health department shows that COVID-19 cases in Florida surpassed 100,000 on Monday.

“Keeping ourselves and our visitors safe is our number one priority, in every theme park. This includes our health and wellbeing. We are encouraged to say something when we see something that we deem is unsafe so we’re speaking up,” they said in the petition.

Eric Clinton, president of the Unite Here Local 362 union that represents Disney workers, said he did not know of the effort.

“Disney Springs has been open for over a month, and I haven’t heard of one news report or one cast member or one guest saying, ‘I got COVID 19,′” he then added.

The petition has 5,357 signatures as of this writing.
