Don’t Fauci My Florida
The governor’s campaign team announced on Twitter that supporters can purchase merchandise online that displays the “Don’t Fauci My Florida” slogan. Supporters can purchase beer koozies and shirts that display the slogan.
In addition, the merchandise collection also includes koozies with a print that says“How the hell am I going to be able to drink a beer with a mask on?” and shirts that say “Keep Florida Free”.
Meanwhile, pundits say that the gear was meant to mock the draconian measures endorsed by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s resident infectious disease expert. DeSantis opposes what he sees as excessive measures such as lockdowns and mask mandates.
The governor prefers a different approach, allowing Florida residents to retain their constitutionally enshrined freedoms even as they battle the virus.
Florida Didn’t Follow Fauci
During a state budget discussion, DeSantis noted that Florida’s positive financial outlook wasn’t possible if they followed Fauci’s orders. Instead, “we followed freedom,’ DeSantis said. The governor is running for re-election next year. Even as he sets to extend his term. Many Republicans see DeSantis as a potential presidential candidate for 2024.
Even as DeSantis continues to openly mock Fauci, the state is experiencing a resurgent number of cases. Specifically, Florida holds the record for highest COVID-19 deaths per capita in the US as of Wednesday.
The state also holds the record for the second-highest number of daily cases. Meanwhile, Fauci reacted to DeSanti’s mockery by calling it “bizarre.”
Democrats Don’t Find It Funny
Meanwhile, scores of Democrats took a swipe at DeSantis for his ‘Don’t Fauci My Florida’ campaign. The View co-host Anna Navarro chided DeSantis for “exploiting and profiting off the pandemic”. She also labeled the merchandise both “irresponsible and shameful.”
In particular, the Washington Post wrote a negative piece on DeSantis’ campaign merchandise, saying that the time timing was less than perfect. The governor came out with merch sales deriding COVID-19 measures as “new coronavirus cases [in the state] near highest in the nation”.
In addition, Miami-Dade Democrats wrote on Twitter that “Over 38k Floridians have died of COVID and @GovRonDeSantis thinks it's appropriate to sell merch mocking their deaths. We can't let this continue. We must elect a Democratic Governor in 2022.”
