Dr. Deborah Birx has announced her plans to retire after being caught breaking holiday travel restrictions. However, she says she is willing to help President-elect Joe Biden’s team with regards to COVID-19 response first.

Birx faced backlash after being caught breaking restrictions even though she told people to stay at home. She was spotted a day after Thanksgiving at one of her vacation properties in Delaware. According to a report by the New York Post, she was joined by three generations of her family.

The doctor complained about how people treated her and her family. Birx defended herself, saying that her trip was not to celebrate Thanksgiving. She described the experience as “a bit overwhelming.”

“I did not go to Delaware for the purpose of celebrating Thanksgiving,” Birx explained. “I think what was done in the past week to my family — you know, they didn’t choose this for me. They’ve tried to be supportive, but to drag my family into this,” she trailed off.

She also tried to excuse her trip, saying: “My daughter hasn’t left that house in 10 months, my parents have been isolated for 10 months. They’ve become deeply depressed as I’m sure many elderly have as they’ve not been able to see their sons, their granddaughters.”

She also mentioned that “My parents have not been able to see their surviving son for over a year. These are all very difficult things.”

Birx Offers to Help Biden

Following the backlash, Birx announced her retirement, but she also said she’s open to help the upcoming administration when dealing with its COVID-19 response.

“I want the Biden administration to be successful,” Birx said. “I will be helpful in any role that people think I can be helpful in and then I will retire.”

The doctor has been in public service since the Reagan administration. She is currently the White House’s coordinator for coronavirus response.

Birx has stayed in good graces with President Trump. However, health experts and democrats have criticized her for staying mum when the president openly disregarded pieces of advice from medical experts on how the government can fight the virus.
