El Pollo Loco is rolling out revamped vegan tacos and burritos at its 485 restaurants nationwide.

El Pollo Loco, Inc. “becomes the first national chicken brand in the category to roll out its own vegan chicken alternative system-wide,” the company said in a press release.

“Following the success of the Chickenless Pollo™ launch earlier this year and positive customer feedback, El Pollo Loco reformulated its fan favorite, plant-based chicken alternative for vegan palates to further the company’s long-term commitment to diversifying the menu with better-for-you options,” the press release read.

Fox Business explained that customers can choose to have a “Make It Vegan” order. When they do, they will get a meal made from plant-based chicken.

“Our customers provided feedback through our social channels,” said El Pollo Loco President and CEO Bernard Acoca in a statement. “We listened and quickly reformulated the recipe in a matter of a couple months,” he then added. “Evolving our customer favorite Chickenless Pollo innovation takes us another step further in the plant-based space and continues our commitment to championing making healthier eating more accessible and affordable.”

The American Vegetarian Association has certified the new Chickenless Pollo. The press release explained that it blends traditional Mexican flavors in an adobo sauce with a non-GMO soy protein base created by the company. It also does not contain egg enzymes anymore.
