Biden Won’t Rule Out Executive Orders For Gun Control

Reportedly, President Joe Biden won’t rule out executive orders for gun control. According to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, Biden is placing priority on gun control. In fact, Biden is not afraid of standing up to the National Rifle Association. A Tuesday press conference talked about the president’s call for banning semi-automatic firearms and implementing other measures.

Gun Legislation Proposals

Psaki’s comments came Tuesday during the White House press briefing when Biden called on Congress to take action on the three-year anniversary of the Parkland school shooting. “This administration will not wait for the next mass shooting to heed that call. We will take action to end our epidemic of gun violence and make our schools and communities safer,” Biden said in a White House statement Sunday. 

“Today, I am calling on Congress to enact common-sense gun law reforms, including requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets,” he announced. “We owe it to all those we’ve lost and to all those left behind to grieve to make a change. The time to act is now,” he added.

No Proposal Yet 

When asked about potential gun legislation proposed by the administration, Psaki admitted that there are no concrete proposals yet. “We haven’t proposed a package at this point, so it’s hard for me to make a prediction about the likelihood of passing,” Psaki admitted. 

“I don’t have a prediction for you or a preview for you on a timeline of a package, and certainly not what it will look like and how it goes through Congress. But I will say that the president is somebody, throughout his career, who has advocated for the smart gun, smart gun safety measures. Also, Biden is not afraid of standing up to the NRA – he has done it multiple times,” Psaki said. This can also mean Biden using executive orders for gun control measures.

NRA Will Oppose Any Measures

Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association vowed to oppose any gun control proposals from Biden.  “It will be up to these millions of law-abiding gun owners, and millions of NRA members, to make their voices heard in opposition to any infringement upon their constitutional rights,” the organization said in a tweet. 

In a separate tweet posted after Biden’s statement, the NRA gave its members updates on what the new proposals entail. “TODAY: President Biden issued a statement calling on Congress to Ban commonly owned firearms (AR-15s) and 10+ round mags; Criminalize private firearm transfers; Run firearm manufacturers & dealers out of business,” the NRA tweeted.

Representative Jackson Lee’s Gun Control Proposal

Earlier this month, Democrat Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (TX) proposed a new gun control bill that will create a national firearm registry. It sets minimum gun ownership at 21 years and will require federal licensing and psychological evaluations. Also, Jackson Lee’s bill makes it a crime to possess a firearm or ammunition without a federal license or sell one to someone without a license. In addition, those with a history of mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse, homicidal or suicidal thoughts, or brain disease are ineligible to receive a license. 

In an overreaching provision, gun owners will need to register their firearms with the federal government. Consequently, the US Attorney General will have jurisdiction over licensing through the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. In addition, Jackson Lee's bill will also regulate what Americans can and cannot display in their homes. Also, antique firearms will require a federal license.
