Sen. Rand Paul Shows Proof That Fauci Lied About Wuhan

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) said that newly public documents proved that Dr. Anthony Fauci lied. The documents show that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases funded virus research in Wuhan, China. Previously, Fauci denied that the US government-issued money to fund the research.

Documents Prove Fauci Lied During His Previous Testimony  

Senator Paul tweeted a story from The Intercept that revealed the extent of support given by the US government to coronavirus research in Wuhan, China. He added that: “Surprise surprise – Fauci lied again.”

In its report, The Intercept said it obtained more than 900 pages of documents. It detailed the work of EcoHealth Alliance,  a US-based health organization.

EcoHealth gave federal money to fund bat coronavirus research in Wuhan. The documents include two previously unpublished grant proposals funded by the NIAID. The total money amounted to $3.1 million.

The documents also contain project updates relating to EcoHealth Alliance’s research. The Intercept managed to secure the documents through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Rand Paul: I Was Right That Fauci Lied

Meanwhile, Senator Rand Paul blasted Fauci for continuing to deny allegations of funding despite the documents. “And I was right about his agency funding novel Coronavirus research at Wuhan,” Paul said.

According to the report, around $600,000 of the total federal money went to Wuhan to fund efforts to alter bat coronaviruses. These altered viruses can transfer to humans and infect them.

Paul’s tweet followed a story in The Intercept that revealed the U.S. government pumped $3.1 million into EcoHealth Alliance. The money covered a five-year grant from 2014 until 2019.

After the funding received a renewal in 2019, the Trump White House suspended the grant in April 2020 at the height of the pandemic. 

Ebright: Fauci Lied

Molecular biologist Richard Ebright of Rutgers University also studied the documents obtained through the FOI Act. “The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at WIV are untruthful,” he tweeted. 

“The materials show that the 2014 and 2019 NIH grants to EcoHealth with subcontracts to WIV funded gain-of-function research as defined in federal policies in effect in 2014-2017,” he said, It included “potential pandemic pathogen enhancement as defined in federal policies in effect in 2017-present,” he added. 

Previous Clashes

Previously, Paul and Fauci clashed during Senate hearings over the government’s participation in Wuhan’s virus research efforts. Fauci repeatedly testified that the NIH did not fund any gain-of-function research.

Last May, lawmakers grilled Fauci about the origins of COVID-19 and funding of the Wuhan lab on Capitol Hill. At the time, Fauci said that “Sen. Paul, with all due respect, you are entirely, entirely and completely incorrect… the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan Institute.”

Then, the two met again in another hearing last July. The Kentucky senator interrogated Fauci about his earlier testimony. “Dr. Fauci, knowing that it is a crime to lie to Congress, do you wish to retract your statement of May 11 where you claimed that the NIH never funded gain-of-function research and move on?” Paul asked.

“Senator Paul, I have never lied before the Congress, and I do not retract that statement. This paper that you’re referring to was judged by qualified staff, up and down the chain, as not being gain-of-function,” Fauci replied.
