The Florida Department of Education has recently issued an emergency order. It mandates that all its schools must reopen for the fall semester – amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran has signed the order and addresses school boards and charter school governing boards. According to the order, all “brick and mortar schools” must reopen beginning in August for at least five days per week, reported Fox News.

Corcoran issued the order with the following goals:

  • Reopen “brick and mortar schools with the full panoply of services for the benefit of Florida students and families”
  • Suspend and adjust “as necessary reporting requirements to ensure appropriate monitoring and financial continuity of the educational process”
  • Retain “high-quality school choices for Florida students and families with a focus on eliminating achievement gaps, which may have been exacerbated by the crisis”
  • Maintain “services that are legally required for all students, such as low-income, English language learning, and students with disabilities”

Education serves a critical role “to the success of the state and to an individual,” Corcoran also wrote in the order. “Extended school closures can impede the educational success of students, impact families’ well-being and limit many parents and guardians from returning to work,” he continued.
