Forecasters Foresee Intense Atlantic Hurricane Season

Forecasters predict an intense Atlantic hurricane season – with as many as 13 to 19 named storms. According to disaster preparedness experts, people in evacuation zones must plan to stay with friends and family.

“Shelters are meant to keep you safe, not make you comfortable,” said Carlos Castillo, acting deputy administrator for resilience at FEMA.

“Social distancing and other CDC guidance to keep you safe from COVID-19 may impact the disaster preparedness plan you had in place, including what is in your go-kit, evacuation routes, shelters, and more,” Castillo also said. “With tornado season at its peak, hurricane season around the corner, and flooding, earthquakes and wildfires a risk year-round, it is time to revise and adjust your emergency plan now,” he then stated.

Hurricane Season Outlook

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 6 to 10 of the storms can possibly become hurricanes. They could have winds that run 74 mph or higher. Additionally, of those storms, can become 3 to 6 major hurricanes. The said hurricanes can also fall under categories 3, 4 or 5. They could also have winds that are as fast as 111 mph or more. Its website also says that NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence.

Neil Jacobs, acting administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center commented on the matter. “It is not possible to predict how many will hit land,” he said.

People in the U.S. are focusing on the safe reopening of the country. With this, “it remains critically important that we also remember to make the necessary preparations for the upcoming hurricane season,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “Just as in years past, NOAA experts will stay ahead of developing hurricanes and tropical storms,” he added. Ross then said these experts will “provide the forecasts and warnings we depend on to stay safe.”

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th.
