Dems Push for Greene’s Removal from House Committees

House Democrats are moving for a vote Thursday for Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s removal from House committees. This came after the House Republican leadership met with the embattled neophyte representative but didn’t do anything further. Instead, the GOP House leadership attacked Democrats for trying to interfere.

Dems Call For Greene’s Removal 

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) said that the House would vote Thursday on whether to relieve Greene of her committee assignments. Hoyer said that the decision resulted from Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's failure to take action against her. “I spoke to Leader McCarthy this morning, and it is clear there is no alternative to holding a Floor vote on the resolution to remove Rep. Greene from her committee assignments. The Rules Committee will meet this afternoon, and the House will vote on the resolution tomorrow,” Hoyer tweeted. Meanwhile, House Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries (NY) wanted the GOP to handle it. The best thing about this issue is that “Kevin McCarthy should handle this problem,” Jeffries said.

Republicans sent a last-minute offer to the Dems to call off the floor vote. They proposed giving Greene an alternative form of punishment if the majority would remove the vote from the agenda. McCarthy proposed removing Greene from the House Education Committee and moving her to the Small Business panel. However, Greene will retain her membership on the House Budget Committee. Hoyer immediately rejected the proposal. He said that the House will vote for Greene’s removal from all her committees. 

Partisan Power Grab

Instead, McCarthy put out a statement accusing House Democrats of attempting a “partisan power grab” by wanting to discipline Greene. “I understand that Marjorie’s comments have caused deep wounds to many and as a result, I offered Majority Leader Hoyer a path to lower the temperature and address these concerns. Instead of coming together to do that, the Democrats are choosing to raise the temperature by taking the unprecedented step to further their partisan power grab regarding the committee assignments of the other party,” McCarthy said. 

In addition, the House Minority Leader said that he already spoke with Greene. He made it clear that as a member of the House, she needs to hold herself to a higher standard. He said that Greene understood the newfound expectations for her as Georgia representative. “Her past comments now have much greater meaning. Marjorie recognized this in our conversation. I hold her to her word, as well as her actions going forward,” he said. 

Greene Under Fire

Hoyer countered that they had no choice remaining as the GOP didn’t address Greene’s comments. “She has placed many members in fear for their welfare. And she has attacked and made incendiary remarks prior to but also during her term as a member of Congress,” Hoyer told reporters Wednesday. He added that they believe Green gave comfort to “those who led an insurrection” at the Capitol last January 6.

Greene got nationwide attention when her previous social media activities and comments came back to haunt her. Among her many quotable remarks are posts calling for violence among prominent Democrats. This includes a speech where she said Pelosi is guilty of treason, which is punishable by death. Greene also made earlier posts that claim the Parkland and Sandy Hook school shootings were hoaxes. In a video, she confronted a Parkland survivor, David Hogg, and asked how he managed to get media coverage. She also called him a “coward,” and said he’s an agent of an anti-gun figure. In addition, Green also made previous remarks with racist, Islamophobic, and anti-Semitic views. Also, she promoted QAnon conspiracy theories and massive election fraud last November. 

Meeting with McCarthy 

Late Tuesday, McCarthy met with Greene ahead of a GOP Steering Committee schedule. During the meeting, McCarthy asked Greene to voluntarily depart the Education Committee or apologize for her previous statements, a source reported. Greene refused to do either. Afterward, the Steering Committee didn’t arrive at a decision on what to do next. It was then that Hoyer told McCarthy what the House Democrats will do the next day. 

McCarthy made similar remarks to Republicans privately, insisting he doesn’t want a floor vote for Greene. This can create a precedent where Democrats would come after others for past controversial statements otherwise. If the floor vote happens, Republicans will have to go on record against a Donald Trump supporter that many do not like. In fact, GOP members of the Rules Committee already denounced Greene’s past comments.

Rules Committee Wants Her Gone

Meanwhile, the House Rules Committee Chair Jim McGovern (D-MA) said Greene should resign. “I don’t think she’s fit to serve in this institution,” he said. Removing her committee assignments is “the minimum,” McGovern added. Plus, the fact that Greene has yet to apologize for her remarks, means that “She's doubled down on it. She's fundraising off this stuff,” McGovern said.
