The investigation revealed that Mello operated with minimal oversight. Her long tenure and trusted civilian status at the base helped her avoid detection. Prosecutors also discovered that she forged her supervisor’s signature on many payment requests. To put the theft in perspective, the amount Mello embezzled equaled five times the cost of a major child-development center built this year at Fort Eisenhower in Georgia.
