On Wednesday, Herschel Walker, a former football star, officially declared that he is running for the Senate in Georgia. He will head into a Republican primary race, challenging Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in the upcoming 2022 midterm elections. This crucial race can ultimately decide which political party would control the majority in the Senate.

In a statement, Walker said that the U.S. was at a crossroads. He added that he couldn’t take simply sitting on the sidelines anymore.

He further stated that the U.S. is “the greatest country in the world. However, he noted that a lot of politicians currently serving in the Capitol are scared of saying this. If elected to the Senate, he said he will defend conservative values and push for the country to move in the right path. Walker added that it’s time for the country to have leaders who will protect the American Dream for everyone in the U.S.\

Walker’s announcement comes after a day he submitted his paperwork to set up his campaign.

This also comes after former President Donald Trump, a longtime friend of Walker, supported him and encouraged him to run for senate despite the concerns of some GOP members over the first-time candidate’s ability to clinch a seat for the Republican Party.

With his announcement, the football star has become the most prominent candidate for the upcoming midterm race for the Republican Party’s nomination in Georgia. Others who are vying for the victory include the state’s Agriculture Commissioner, Gary Black, and two U.S. military veterans, Latham Saddler and Kelvin King. Black announced his candidacy back in June, while Saddler and King launched their campaigns earlier this year.
