Election 2020
House Approves Impeachment Inquiry Rules After Fiery Floor Debate
A divided House voted to approve a resolution setting “ground rules” for the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. The vote statistics were 232-196. Two Democrats defected on the vote. This decision is a critical step forward in its impeachment inquiry. More than formalizing the inquiry, this clears the way for nationally televised hearings and ensures “Trump’s right to participate in the latter stage of the proceedings unless he tries to block witnesses from testifying.”
The first formal floor vote about the impeachment probe has caused a fierce debate where Republicans accused Democrats of launching a de facto ‘coup’ against the president in a ‘pre-ordained’ bid to overturn the results of the 2016 election.”
According to The Washington Post, after the House vote, “the White House accused Democrats of having an ‘unhinged obsession’ with impeachment, with press secretary Stephanie Grisham calling the effort a ‘blatantly partisan attempt to destroy the president.’”
