McCarthy Tired Of Cheney, Calls For New House GOP Chair

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) grows tired of Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) as House GOP Chair. As a result, he endorsed a replacement for her ahead of a GOP vote scheduled later this week.

Earlier, McCarthy gave his endorsement after news surfaced that Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) plans to start a call Wednesday morning.

Specifically, Foxx will call for Cheney’s removal as House Republican Conference Chair. “Democrats are destroying this nation. We’ve watched the greatest expansion of government [in] this socialist liberal agenda.

We watched them destroy our borders, where hundreds of thousands are coming across, not being tested for COVID. We’re catching people on the terrorist watch list,” McCarthy said. 

“You’ve got the destruction of our energy. You’ve got the largest missed jobs report [in] more than two decades. To defeat Nancy Pelosi and the socialist agenda, we need to be united — and that starts with leadership.

That’s why we will have a vote next week. And we want to be united in looking, moving forward. And I think that’s what will take place,” he added. 

Potential Candidates for New House GOP Chair

Specifically, one of the names floated to replace Cheney is Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY). “What we’re talking about, it’s a position in leadership.

We are in one of our biggest battles ever for this nation and the direction, whether this next century will be ours,” McCarthy said. “As conference chair, you have one of the most critical jobs as the messenger of going forward.

Are we talking about what the Democrats are doing on the border, are we talking about all the missed jobs reports that we just had, are we building an economy?” he said. 

McCarthy added that Biden is creating never-before-seen inflation while also wanting to raise taxes. He said he's afraid the damages of the Biden era aren't something “we cannot come back for.”

Following the minority leader's endorsement, Stefanik tweeted he thanks. “Together, as one team, we will stand up for the American people and #FIREPelosi in 2022,” she tweeted.

In endorsing Stefanik, McCarthy follows endorsements from former President Donald Trump and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise for Stefanik.

“That’s why we need a conference that’s united,” McCarthy continued. “That’s why we need a conference chair that is delivering that message day in and day out and uniting the nation to make sure that we are on the right footing going forward.”

Cheney In the Hot Seat

Meanwhile, House Republicans remain divided over the future of the party. In fact, many GOP members remain loyal to Trump and tied their electoral fortunes to a potential White House return.

Meanwhile, others including Cheney voted with Democrats to impeach Trump earlier this year. She also called for a lesser role for Trump moving forward.

Last week, McCarthy said that rank-and-file GOP lawmakers expressed concerns to him about Cheney's ability to “carry out the message” and successfully do her job as conference chair.

Meanwhile, Cheney is precariously holding on to her seat day-to-day. Earlier, she survived an attempt to oust her from the position of conference chair.

However, tensions remain high as many GOP lawmakers see Cheney as divisive. In particular, the Wyoming representative remains a  staunch critic of the former President. In addition, she wants the GOP to move on after Trump’s recent election loss.
