McConnell Says Move to Impeach the President Not Happening

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell downplayed GOP calls to impeach the President. He said that impeachment isn’t possible right now even if President Joe Biden bungled the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

GOP Can’t Impeach The President As Democrats Control Congress

Speaking at a Pikeville, Kentucky event, Senator Mitch McConnell noted that Democrats control both the House and the Senate. This makes calls to impeach the President difficult, if not impossible.

“I think the way these behaviors get adjusted in this country is at the ballot box,” said McConnell. “The President is not going to be removed from office with a Democratic House and a narrowly Democratic Senate. That's not going to happen,” he added. 

McConnell's remarks were a reaction to calls from his party mates to impeach the President. A suicide bombing attack outside Kabul airport last week killed 13 US troops and 170 Afghans.

The Taliban’s sworn enemy, ISIS-K (Islamic State Khorasan) claimed responsibility for the bombing. In addition, Biden claimed “extraordinary success” in evacuation efforts from Afghanistan. However, hundreds of Americans and thousands of Afghan partners remain stranded in the country with no way out. 

Impeach The President If He Won’t Resign

Prominent Republican lawmakers, including Senators Lindsey Graham (SC) and Marsha Blackburn (TN), called for President Biden to resign due to the fiasco. Otherwise, they called for his removal from office. 

Meanwhile, the President defended his decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan in a White House speech Tuesday. He said he was left with no choice but to complete the withdrawal as agreed by the previous administration with the Taliban.

Plus, he expected complexities while the US evacuated troops and civilians in the middle of the country’s civil war. “The bottom line is there is no evacuation from the end of a war that you can run without the kind of complexities, challenges, threats we face. None,” he said.

Resisting Calls From The GOP

This is not the first time McConnell resisted calls from the GOP to impeach the President.  Representative Marjorie Taylor-Green (R-GA) filed three separate impeachment articles against Biden last month. When asked if he agreed with Taylor-Green, McConnell flatly said “No.” 

In addition, Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) Calif.) also resisted calls to impeach the President right now. However, he foresees a time when a GOP-controlled House will initiate an inquiry into Biden’s disastrous Afghanistan exit. Once that happens, he said it would be a “day of reckoning.” 

Democrats Tried to Impeach Trump…Twice

During the administration of former President Donald Trump, the Democrat-majority House tried to impeach the president twice.

The first was in 2020 for his alleged deals with Ukraine, Meanwhile, the second one was during the tail-end of his presidency. Democrats filed an article to impeach the president over his role in the January 6 Capitol riots. 

As far as McConnell is concerned, the GOP is looking forward to the midterm elections next year. Republicans are feeling good about their chances of wresting the majority from both the House and the Senate. If that happens, they’ll take it as a chance to hold Biden accountable for his blunders.
