Sickened At Standing Ovation for Will Smith

Smith, who won Best Actor that night, went onstage to tearfully accept his award to a standing ovation. Appearing on CBS Mornings last Tuesday to promote his new film “Sonic 2,” Carrey talked to host Gayle King.

He said he found the scene exceptionally appalling. “I was sickened by the standing ovation. “I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse,” he said. “It really felt like, ‘Oh, this is a really clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore,'” Carrey added.

Earlier, Smith cried as he accepted his award for portraying Richard Williams, father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena.

Instead of getting back on stage to accept his award, Carrey said that security should have led Smith out of the venue.

$200 Million Lawsuit If Carrey Was The One Slapped

King asked Carrey about his take when Rock decided not to press charges against Smith. Carrey said that Rock probably didn’t want the hassle that comes with filing a police complaint.

However, had he been in the same situation, Carrey would initiate a lawsuit immediately.

“I'd have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video was going to be there forever. It's going to be ubiquitous.

You know, that insult is going to last a very long time,” Carrey remarked. He believed that Smith could yell from the crowd or say something on Twitter.

But “you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words,” he said.

‘It Came Out of Nowhere’

In addition, Carrey thought that Smith’s outburst came from somewhere else. He corrected King who thought that the slap was an escalation. “It didn't escalate. It came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that's frustrated, and I wish him the best. I really do,” he said.

“I don't have anything against Will Smith. He's done great things, but that was not a good moment,” Carrey explained. “It cast a pall over everybody's shining moment last night. A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place and to have their moment in the sun.

Jim Carrey Disappointed That Smith’s Assault Ruined It For Other Winners That Night

Jim Carrey knew that it’s “no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you're nominated for an Oscar”.

He felt that Smith ruined the moment for a lot of award winners just to get even with Rock. “It's a gauntlet of devotion that you have to do, and it was just a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing,” he added.

During After Party, Smith Appeared Unfazed Over Incident

Meanwhile, Smith seemed to move on from the incident based on what people saw at an Oscar after party. The Cut reported that the newest Best Actor “was all smiles as he rolled up to the event with his Oscar in his hand, accompanied by his very good-looking family”.

Video clips that appeared over social media saw Smith grinning and waving his Oscar in the air while dancing to his own songs.
