Johnny Depp Blasts Cancel Culture, It’s ‘So Far Out of Hand’

Award-winning actor Johnny Depp called out cancel culture, saying that the movement is “so far out of hand”. Because of that, nobody is safe from a mob mentality.

In addition, the actor called on ordinary people to stand up against injustice when loved ones become slandered.

Johnny Depp was a Victim of Cancel Culture

Johnny Depp knows a thing or two about cancel culture. For the past two years, the actor has been involved in a very public dispute with his ex-wife Amber Heard. Last year, Depp lost a libel lawsuit he filed against The Sun.

In a 2018 article, the UK tabloid called him a “wife-beater,” which the actor took offense to. Depp’s lawyers allege that Depp never abused Heard. In fact, they alleged that Heard did the abuse on many occasions.  

However, British rules against slander are much more stringent. As a result, Depp lost his case. A London judge said that using civil standards, Depp can be guilty of the bulk of Heard’s domestic abuse claims.

Depp moved on by filing a $50 million lawsuit against Heard. This time, he did so in a US court. Not to take the matter lying down, Heard filed a $100 million counterclaim.

Whether Depp did abuse her ex-wife or not, the damage has been done. Mega studio Walt Disney Co dropped Johnny Depp from his blockbuster franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean” days after Heard’s testimony.  

Johnny Depp Receives Donostia Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival

Depp attended the San Sebastian film festival, which started last week, to receive an award. He took the Donostia Award for career achievement and thanked the organizers.

He admitted that some people might find his presence at the festival offensive. However, he still thanked director Jose Luis Rebordinos and the city mayor for “not buying what has been, for far too long, some notion of me that doesn't exist.”

During a news conference, Depp lashed out at the present film industry. “Hollywood is certainly not what it was. Large, large corporations take control of these things.

As someone who takes part in the creation of cinema, how much more formula do we need from the likes of studios? How much more condescension do we need as audiences? I think that Hollywood has grotesquely underestimated the audience,” he said. 

Instant Rush to Judgment

Prior to the Film Festival, Depp talked to industry reporters about cancel culture. “It can be seen as an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture, this instant rush to judgment based on what essentially amounts to polluted air,” Depp said.

“It's so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door. No one is safe. It takes one sentence and there's no more ground, the carpet has been pulled,” he added. 

In addition, he said that cancel culture already took many victims. “It's not just me that this has happened to, it's happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men.

Sadly at a certain point, they begin to think that it's normal. Or that it's them. When it's not,” he added. “It doesn't matter if a judgment, per se, has taken some artistic license.

When there's an injustice, whether it's against you or someone you love, or someone you believe in — stand up, don't sit down. ‘Cause they need you,” he implored the audience.
