Heroic LAPD Officers Save Pilot After Crashing on Train Tracks (Video)

On late Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released video footage showing police officers rescuing a bleeding pilot to safety just seconds before an incoming train collided with the pilot’s plane that was stuck on the tracks.

The incident happened at around 2 p.m. local time in Pacoima. The single-engine airplane, a Cessna 172, happened to crashland on the tracks of the Metrolink Antelope Valley line, per Fox 5 San Diego. Rescue personnel arrived at the scene of the incident and managed to pull the pilot out of his plane just a few moments before a speeding train hit it.

The video captured how the officers from the LAPD’s Foothill Division tried to get the pilot out of the plane on the railroad tracks located at San Fernando Road and Osborne Street. The said pilot had an injury on his head, which had caused him to bleed heavily. The officers managed to pull him out about 15 feet from his plane mere seconds before impact. With this, the LAPD credited the officers’ “heroism and quick action” to save the man.

According to the report, authorities did not release the pilot’s identification immediately. However, they managed to rush him to a regional trauma center for treatment. He was the only one onboard the Cessna.

The said plane crashed shortly after it took off from Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, a community in the San Fernando Valley, per the Federal Aviation Administration.

Photographs taken from the scene showed the single-engine plane as it came to a stop with both its left wing and nose touching the pavement by the train tracks.

According to officials, the train service at Metrolink needed to be halted and road traffic in the area was detoured.
