Los Angeles: ER Nurse Dies After Fatal Attack in Union Station

The nurse from Los Angeles who was hospitalized on Thursday following an attack by a homeless man near Union Station has succumbed from her injuries, reports said on Sunday.

According to the LA Times, Sandra Shells, who was believed to be in her 60s and 70s, formerly worked at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. The said hospital remembered the nurse as a tireless worker who will be remembered by people as a “kind, compassionate and giving” person.

The attack on Shells happened at a bus stop just after 5 in the morning on E. Chavez Avenue, according to Fox 11. The suspect reportedly struck the nurse, causing her to fall to the ground. According to the station, she was rushed to the hospital where she worked for brain surgery.

Authorities arrested the suspect, Kerry Bell, 48, and booked him on charges of attempted murder. According to ABC, the suspect was apprehended sleeping near the scene of the crime. Citing the police, the paper said Bell had his bail set at $2 million.

In a statement, LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis paid tribute to Shells, saying that “As a frontline essential worker, she helped save countless lives throughout the pandemic and it is a heartbreaking loss to lose a hero.”
