Lyft Commits to Switching to Electric Vehicles by 2030

Ridesharing company Lyft said that every vehicle on its ride-hailing and rental car platform will be electric by 2030.

“Vehicle emissions are one of the largest sources of climate pollution. That’s why we’re committing to reach 100% #ElectricVehicles on the Lyft platform by 2030, in collaboration with @EnvDefenseFund. It's an ambitious goal, and we're up for the challenge,” the company said on Twitter.

However, the company would not provide direct financial support to drivers for switching from gas-powered cars. It does, however, plan to “push competitors, lawmakers and automakers to make it easier for drivers to switch to electric vehicles by creating financial incentives,” Lyft executives also said, as reported by Fox Business.

Also, as per John Zimmer, Lyft’s co-founder and president, the company has reached a scale to impact policy change.

“At Lyft, we made a choice. Rather than hunker down and ride out COVID-19, we chose to stand up and accelerate our efforts to address the climate crisis. With transportation recently overtaking electricity as the single largest source of planet-disrupting greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution in the US and the second-largest source in Canada, we believe now is the time for Lyft to lead a radical shift in strategy,” the company said in a blog post.

“Now more than ever, we need to work together to create cleaner, healthier, and more equitable communities,” also said Zimmer.

“Success breeds success, and if we do this right, it creates a path for others. If other rideshare and delivery companies, automakers and rental car companies make this shift, it can be the catalyst for transforming transportation as a whole,” he then added.
