Aggressive Man Attacks Florida Patrol Officer on Interstate during Traffic Stop

The Florida Highway Patrol is expressing its gratitude to several good Samaritans who helped an officer after being attacked on an interstate in Tampa last Friday.

The encounter was caught on a dashcam video, showing how the trooper told the suspect, Alexander Hernandez Delgado, 24, that walking on the interstate isn’t allowed.

According to the arrest report, Delgado mentioned to the trooper that he is an artist and he was only walking there since his mother kicked him out of the house.

“I then searched the subject and attempted to place him in the back of my patrol car. The subject became argumentative and stated that I am bothering him and that he would like to be left alone,” the trooper wrote in the said report, adding that “The subject then pulled away and then threw a punch with his left hand that [struck] me in the face.”

The dashcam video also captured how the suspect hit the trooper in the face before the two men go off-camera in the median. According to the trooper in the arrest report, Delgado struck him a few more times.

After the trooper managed to tackle the suspect, a car and an 18-wheeler pulled over and some bystanders went to the officer’s aid in subduing Delgado.

In a statement, a spokesman for the FHP said, “The FHP thanks all the Good Samaritans that stopped on I-4, in both directions, on Friday morning, March 18th in Tampa to help our Trooper.”

The officer suffered a bloody nose as a result of the attack.

Delgado was sent to Hillsborough County Jail. He was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and with resisting an officer with violence.
