Man Proposes to His Girlfriend Before NEOWISE Comet Which Is Only Visible Every 6,800 Years
A couple from New York got engaged after the man proposed before the NEOWISE comet. The said comet is only visible around every 6,800 years.
According to Syracuse.com, John Nicotera and now-fiancé Erica Pendrak met on Instagram.
“We knew of each other. We both coach in the area and have some mutual friends. She posted something one day about basketball and I made a comment underneath it and the conversation kept going from there,” he said.

Nicotera planned to propose to Pendrak during a trip to Crater Lake National Park in Oregon this summer. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the trip was canceled.
Instead, Nicotera invited her to view the NEOWISE comet with him “when it became visible from the Empire State this month,” Fox News reported.
“We had other things going on during the week and that was really the only night that worked for us,” he shared. “At that point, I knew I needed the clouds to be away, the skies to be clear, and Mother Nature to be friendly to me.”
Nicotera got his friend, photographer Tim Leach, to capture photos of the moment on July 18th.
“John, who is a self-proclaimed ‘star-lover’, was viewing the images on my camera after a few attempts and whispered, ‘I’m going to propose, can you get a photo?’ My response – ‘Don’t move for about 7 seconds,’” Leach wrote on his website.
“The result was a slightly out-of-focus, noisy image that was a perfect moment,” he added.
“Can I get a retweet for what I pulled off last night? We even saw the ISS pass by!” Nicotera tweeted, showing beautiful photos of the unforgettable moment.
Nicotera is thankful that Leach “froze the greatest moment of my life so far.”
NASA explained that the comet “takes about 6,800 years to make one lap around its long, stretched out orbit, so it won't visit the inner solar system again for many thousands of years.”
